Gotta Get To Shaws!! 4/17 and on

There is tremendous debate out there right now about the ConAgra catalina deal at Shaws. The advertisement says that it starts TODAY and ends on the 23rd (that would be logical --- it would be a week in the Shaws sales cycle). However, folks who are more into this than I am have called the catalina company and have been told that Shaws is booked to end this promotion TOMORROW!!.
So ---- Get thee to Shaws!!
Here's how the catalina deals work (always --- whenever, wherever) You buy a certain amount of participating products and the machine next to the cash register (called a catalina machine) spits out a coupon good for a certain dollar amount on your next shopping trip. They generally are good for 2 weeks or so. Usually they roll -- meaning you can use one catalina to pay for an order and get another catalina back --- That's the beauty of the deal.
Shaws is running a catalina deal on ConAgra products right now ---Spend $25 on Participating Products and receive $10 Off Your Next Trip!
Most catalina deals at most supermarkets work on Pre-Sale prices. Shaws promos usually do and this one is no exception. That means that the $25 you need to spend is not $25 at the cash register!! It is $25 if the items were at full price. Shaws is terrific about running sales concurrent with their catalina deals ----This time out is no exception. The only tricky part is that PSP (presale prices) are not consistent from area to area --- you have to double and triple check everything yourself. This is a time to definitely have your calculator smoking in the aisle of the supermarket. Remember $24.99 is NOT $25. If you're off by even one penny, the deal will not work. Check the shelf tags and make a list for yourself. It matters.

Free Soap!!!

Who doesn't like free soap??? We all use soap, don't we???
Well, thank you Proctor and Gamble for providing free soap for all of us who are savvy enough to be paying attention ---
In the 4/5 P&G insert there is a $2 off Olay bar soap (When you look at the coupon, you wont' think it is good on soap, but if you check the tiny print all the way through, it IS!!).
The Olay 2-pack bar soap sells for about $1.97 at Walmart so you could get it for FREE with the coupon.
And, Target, Stop & Shop, Price Chopper and Shaw's sell the 2-packs for about $2.29-$2.49 so you could get it really cheap at these stores as well after the $2 coupon!
This is one of those times when you're glad if you have multiple copies of that week's insert. Soap is easy to stockpile -- it doesn't take much space, it doesn't spoil and you know you'll use it.

Shaws doubles coupons up to $1.00 ALL THE TIME. That's part of what makes them a good deal for me.

Supermarket Excursions: How I Save and Even Make Money at the Grocery Store too!!

I don't usually post my supermarket excursions -- but a few of you have asked specifically for them. This may get frustrating --- you all live in very different areas of NE with different supermarkets to work with. I shop both at home and in my work area --- so I shop a wide variety of markets (which you may or may not have). And just to frustrate everyone further -- I don't shop in the same markets every week.
Here's what I do:

1. I sit down with each of the fliers from the markets that are available to me (that would be Price Chopper, Stop and Shop, Shaws, Big Y, Shop Rite, and A&P). I make lists of what's in the fliers that interests me and the prices
2. As if find an item in another flier that is a better deal than where I first wrote it down, I cross it off the previous list and add it to the new list.
3. I am a complete Slickdeals addict. After I've looked through the fliers and formed a tentative idea of what the deals are --- I go to Slickdeals and read through the forums quickly (some of them are very active lists) to see what I might have missed and to get my coupon matches started.
4. Finally I use a database such as CouponMom's to double check for coupons to match my list.

Each week, I'm looking for deals on fresh produce, dairy and other things that are difficult to stockpile. I'm also on the lookout for free food!! If the free food is something that my family enjoys eating, it goes home and in the stockpile in our pantry. If not, then it comes home and goes to the food pantry to help feed people who need food. (I am a huge proponent of being generous with the time and skill of couponing!!)

My pantry is usually very well stocked with staples such as pasta, tuna, beans, dried fruit, flour, oil, rice, etc. Most of these were either FREE or at a very, very low cost. I plan our eating for the week around the staples in my pantry and the deals on fresh produce, dairy, and the occasional meat.

Target and Walmart Week of 4/5

I usually don't play at either Target or Walmart --- Target is a pain to get in and out of where I am --- and Walmart is sneaky. Walmart prices items very differently in different stores, depending on what they think the market will bear. That means that when I price something in one Walmart, it may not hold in another Walmart. I also means that whatever shoppers are posting about on the web may also not hold for me (usually doesn't). That gets frustrating really, really fast. I shop well enough at CVS, Walgreeens, and the grocery stores, that I don't need Walmart most of the time. Occasionally a deal shows up that's good enough for me to spend the time and energy getting there --- and risking the frustration if its a dud.....

The End of Easysaver Rebates

Its official. Walgreens is ending the beloved EasySaver Rebate program at the end of this month. There have been rumors about it all over the web for months, but nothing confirmed --- well, now it is confirmed. This is it. The end.

We all knew that it couldn't continue to be the only place on earth that you could make 10% on your money. But I'm still sad to see it go.

Healthy Eating --- the Budget Way

Nothing is more fundamentally budget bonvivant than getting fresh, healthy food for pennies. We work hard at eating healthily at my house -- and it isn't always easy. Truth be told, our love of fresh, healthy, and fine food is probably a primary impetus for me learning to shop this way. If I'm not paying money for shampoo, toothpaste, and deodorant --- well, I figure that money can go toward arugula, goat cheese, and pumpkin ravioli (three very big favorites at our house).
But when I can get fresh, good food for pennies -- that really floats my boat.
And thanks to Target and Walmart -- I can do that this week. Here's the scoop:
You can get a bag of Dole salad for a measly $.19. Yes, you read that correctly --- NINETEEN CENTS!!! Target has released a fresh batch of coupons this week. In those coupons, there was one for $1.00 off of a bag of Dole salad. (yep, click the link to go to it) If you buy the 6 ounce bag, and use this coupon --- you end up paying only $.19 for the bag of salad. This is one of those times, when the larger size isn't really the bargain. You can repeat this deal as many times as you can print the coupon and carry the salad out of the store.
If you picked up a newspaper last Sunday, then you can also put your hands on cheap salad dressing at Wal-Mart this week.
There was a $1.50 0ff coupon in one of the inserts. This salad dressing is priced at $1.58 at Wal-Mart this week. Use the coupon with the sale and you have $.08 salad dressing. At this price, you can stockpile salad dressing and have it ready for lunch for the next 6 months or so.

Need Pantyhose?? Free??

I found a super note online at PennyPinchingDiva about FREE Ultra Sheer pantyhose at Wal-Mart.

In this Sunday's SmartSource coupon insert, there was a $1.00 off coupon for any No Nonsense product.

At Wal-Mart they have the Ultra Sheer pantyhose priced at $1.00. That is the REGULAR price for these pantyhose, NOT the sale price.

When you combine the coupon with the price, you have free pantyhose.

A Thrifty Mom is also reporting that her packages of pantyhose contained another coupon for $1 off.

You really want to figure out how you're going to get the paper this week. You really want to figure out how you're going to get a couple of papers this week. Really!! There will be five inserts this Sunday

There will be NO coupons the following week because it's a holiday. Remember you can always check the schedule at Taylortown

So, will they be really great coupons?? Who knows. Its possible to go to various sites and check out the coupons ahead of time --- but I've learned the hard way --- that doesn't mean a darn thing in terms of what I'll actually end up with.

According to the coupon gods, which coupons are in your paper depends on the newspaper's distribution count. The bigger the newspaper - the better the coupons. However, those of you who've tried the NY Times know that isn't necessarily so. The NYT coupon selection (if you get any at all) is pathetic. And since several of the papers in the surrounding NYC area are part of the same distribution -- you get the same skinny coupon insert.

You need to be checking out other newspapers than your regular to check out which available papers have the best. Take a few minutes to scan which paper has the fattest inserts --- it really can make a difference.

Free Paper at Staples??

This is one of those deals that depend on luck as much as skill --- but if you get lucky, you can make out like a bandit.....


Staples is selling off paper reams that are in an old packaging style for $1 per ream after rebate. You are wanting a ream pictured here sellling for $6.99 in stores. This looks like a terrific deal and might even be worth a trip to Target.

so, what makes this a good deal?? Well ------ There are two rather nice coupons in this week's paper that were made for this deal:

Diaper Deals

You know I don't usually even pay attention to the diaper deals, but since two friends with babies are starting to shop with me this week, I'm noticing right now ---- (and I hope you two are noticing this post!!)

Ideas: get friends and relatives to print them for you (the site recognizes computers, not users). use old computers that aren't good for much anymore to print them (I actually keep an old laptop that has so little memory its pathetic just for this purpose)

The deal has reportedly been reset -- even if it told you before that you had reached the print limit and couldn't print again --- try it again -- you might get a very nice surprise!

RedBox: Free Video Rentals

Please tell me you're not paying for video rentals anymore!! Please, please, please.

Redbox is constantly putting out codes for free video rentals.
I've written about them before and about how incredibly simple and easy it is to rent from them. Around here you can find RedBox vending machines in most of the major supermarkets, and some of the drugstores. They stand either in the foyer/entry area or sometimes are actually outside of the store. They look like giant vending machines and naturally -- they're RED. Here's a picture of one.

These vending machines provide DVDs rather than the usual soda or snacks. You insert a credit card or debit card (so they know who to charge if you abscond with their DVD). Enter one of the free codes and away you go with a free video rental. If you happen not to have a free code, you still will only pay $1.00 for the night's rental. You pay per night, and the free codes are all free for ONE NIGHT ONLY, so don’t be late taking them back!
If you sign up on the site, you’ll get a text message each Monday with a free code for the week. You’ll also get a free code to get you started. Could they be any more generous?Well, actually YES!!! They can and they are -----
For the month of March, they will put a free code on the Redblog every Wednesday. (Today’s code is: 75EA16 )

There are often oddball codes floating around that will also give you a free rental. These will work for anyone, but remember you can only use each code ONCE per credit/debit card.

Getting Interest from the Bank

One of the things I love about having a snow day is having the time to skim and scan my through some of the really interesting blogs that I don't normally have time to read. One of those is Champagne Living. The author is quite a character -- Zippy -- and she is definitely my kind of gal!! She tackles the usual finding deals and saving money, along with some more "high brow" things like where to find great Broadway tickets, jewelry etc. Like I said, my kind of gal.

Anyway --- browsing through her blog this morning I noticed a post about interest rates at banks. And she was quoting 6% interest from some banks (not near me, but still!!) I could hardly believe my eyes --- I'm thinking I'm doing pretty well when I get 3.5% for crying out loud. So --- of course -- I clicked through and checked out this amazing list of banks and their interest rates. It lists them state by state (if you live right in the little notch where three states intersect -- like I do --- this is huge!!) And while I didn't find 6% in any of my three little states, I did find a little local bank (that I recognized even!!) that was offering 5%. Now, that's not anything to sneeze at.

I have the credit union at work take money out of my paycheck every pay period -- if I don't see it, it doesn't hurt. But as that money accumulates, I keep moving it to different banks to get better interest on my savings (okay, okay --- any interest --- the credit union gives me zippo -- but they'll take it out without my having to do anything. I am a huge fan of the automatic millionaire principle --- just set it up to happen without you seeing it or having to actually do anything and it will actually happen -- which is better than what happens if you have to remember to do it) I'm thinking we might just have found a new bank for the savings account. Thanks Zippy!! This is a good one.

So here's what I'm suggesting ---

1. Go check out Zippy's blog (really, you'll like it) here

2. Go check out this list of banks with the best interest rates for your area (this is checking accounts --- which is good if you need to access the account without physically going to the bank -- I'm sure there must be one for savings accounts too)

3. Have a heart to heart with your calculator and see if you'd make enough money in interest to make it worth the little bit of time it would take you to open a new account and move some money around.

Walgreens is looking mighty good this week. And apparently all of those nasty rumors floating around the web about them discontinuing the Easy Saver program were just that: nasty rumors. Woo Hoo!! I'm a happy camper.
