Oh, as long as I'm at it ---- Price Chopper maybe??? (still deciding if Shoprite is worth my time and energy to even figure out)
Anyway --- Price Chopper --- not bad --- not good..... My plan is to take the double dollar coupons from Stop and Shop over to Price Chopper and have them cross honor them (they're happy to do it -- but you have to physically bring the coupons in and you have to ask!!)

Shaws: Week of 5/31

I can't decide if Shaws is worth my time and energy this week. They're a little bit out of the way, I don't have any CATS to roll or cash in --- and frankly, they're cranky. Maybe, maybe not --- we'll see --- in any event, for those of you for whom the above are NOT issues -- here's my list for Shaws (in the event that I decide to actually go)

10/$10.00
Poland Spring Water
Softsoap (I have a coupon from CVS -- I think--- that will make this a good deal)

Stop and Shop: Week of 5/31

Parts of our pantry are getting pretty low, so I'm more agressive with the groceries right now. Here's what I'm thinking about for Stop and Shop:

Strawberries/Blueberries 2/$4.00

Large Brown Eggs $0.99

Seedless watermelon $0.59/lb

10/$10.00
Starkist Solid White Tuna (I have some $.55 blinkies I got from somewhere)

Tuttorosso Tomatoes

Groceries at Big Y Week of 5/31

Well, actually that's not totally accurate --- the week ends on Wednesday at Big Y. I can never seem to manage having a week that is that different. Drives me bananas!!
Anyway --- I finally got around to looking at the ad (the temptation was triple coupons!!) and looking for matches on the stuff I actually use and want. Here's my list: (its not much, but its some good deals)

Ajax 2X Liquid Laundry Detergent - $1.99
Sparkle Big Roll Paper Towels - 98¢ ($1/2 in 05-03-09 RP) PANTRY

Quiz Time!!

Okay friends --- its quiz time.  One of my favorite bloggers, FishMama has posted the Top Ten Ways to Know You're a Grocery Geek (her term and I love it --- I usually call myself a Coupon Maven --- same thing)
So -- I dare you!!  Go here to her post and see how many apply to you.  Come back and put your score in the comments section.
How geeky are you??? (personally, I scored a perfect 10 and some serious laughter from my husband on this one)
So --- how'd you do???

Price Chopper: Week of 5/11

I know the week is half over, but I'm just getting around to the Price Chopper deals. They haven't been all that enticing of late, so I haven't been as diligent about getting the list done. (not to mention, I've been so crazy busy -- I've had to pick and choose how much shopping I'm actually doing -- and Price Chopper just hasn't been making the cut)
So --- here's my list for Price Chopper this week --- for what its worth.

Fresh Seedless Red Grapes, $.98 lb.
Price Chopper Cheddar Cheese, $2.99
Use $1.00/3 i-saver coupon
Dole Salads, Buy 1 @ 3.49, Get 1 Free

Kraft Salad Dressing, $1.99
Use $1.00/1 Kraft Dressing (can also use $1.50/1 from 5/10 Smart Source insert)
$.99 each

Thomas' English Muffins, $1.29 (1/2 price)

Catalina (CAT) Deal: Buy $20 worth of these participating products from ConAgra and get a $5 CAT coupon good on your next shopping order.

Wesson 64 oz. Vegetable Oil, $3.99
Hunt's Ketchup, $.99
Healthy Choice Soup, $1.39
Peter Pan Peanut Butter, $2.28

Remember: CAT's work on pre-sale prices --- you don't add up the sale prices to get to $20 --- you check the shelf tags and use the regular prices. By the time you take the sale discounts, apply any coupons and then subtract the CAT --- it works out to some amazing deals.
I'm not finding any coupons on the participating items that interest me (there are a few others -- like Chef Boyardee (NOT interested) and Hunts Snack Packs (so NOT interested) -- but it should still make for some cheap pantry essentials.

Shop Rite: Week of 5/3

I'm thinking of making a quick stop at ShopRite this week. Here's what's on my list (remember, I never shop at all of the stores available to me. I pick and choose the deals and go from there. This week I have a little extra time available, so I can do a little more picking and choosing)

Hefty One Zip bags $1.00
Use .55 coupon from 3/29/09RP
doubled to $1.10
Final cost: PROFIT $.51

Reynold's Wrap Aluminum Foil 25 sq. ft. $1.00
Use $1.00 coupon from 3/15/09SS
or.75 coupon from 3/15/09SS
double to $1.50
Final cost: PROFIT $.50

Tropicana Orange Juice 89 oz: $2.88 (Wed. - Sat.)
Use $1.00 coupon from 5/3/09RP
Final cost: $1.88

Peter Pan peanut butter $1.88
Use $1.00 coupon from 5/3/09SS
Final cost: $.88

Niagara Spray Starch $.99 (we're out of starch and we actually use it)
Use .25 coupon from 2/22/09SS
double to .50
Final cost: .49

Spray n Wash Laundry Stain Remover $1.99
Use .50 coupon from 5/3/09SS
double to $1.00
Final cost: $ .99

Eggo Waffles $2.00
Use .75 coupon from 4/5/09RP
double to $1.50
Final cost: .50

Zone Perfect Bars .99
Use this B1G1 printable
Final cost: .99 for 2

Colgate Maxwhite Toothbrush .99
Use $1.00 4/19/09SS or 4/26/09SS
Final cost: FREE

So all in all, I figure I'll walk out of ShopRite with a reusable shopping bag full of stuff that we actually use and need and I'll spend just under $5.00 (if I get one of each item -- I'm thinking of getting a couple of the Tropicana and the Peanut Butter. The Tropicana we'll use at our house. The peanut butter is a strong price and I'll donate to the food pantry--- they always appreciate peanut butter. Also, given our usage of spray starch lately, I probably should pick up more than one of those as well. Still, my oop would be quite low)

Shaws, Shaws, Shaws, Shaws....

I had a good run at Shaws tonight. I seized the opportunity to do some stocking up on paper goods (plus we were out of garbage bags --- grrrr – how the heck does that happen??)
Anyway --- here it is
Transaction #1
7 rolls of Viva paper towels --- sale price $1.99 (psp $2.29)
Total: $13.93 (but I’m over the $15 to kick in the cat)
Used 7 coupons from the paper for $.85 each and they ALL doubled (only the first 5 should have doubled according to Shaws’ rules)
New Total: $2.88 ---
Paid oop and got a CAT good for $5.00

Transaction #2
2 boxes of Glad trash bags $6.49 each (psp $7.99)
Total: $12.98 (but I’m over the $15 psp for the CAT again)
Used 1 coupon from the paper for $1.00 off (no doubling)
New Total: $11.98
Paid with my CAT from above and
$6.98 oop (we needed trash bags!!) and got a CAT for $5.00

Transaction #3
12 boxes of Kleenex at 10/$10 (psp $1.29)
Total: $12.00 (you guessed it – over the $15 psp again)
Used 4 coupons for $.50/ 3 which doubled
New total: $8.00
Paid with my CAT from above –
$3.00 oop

Transaction #4
10 pouches of Bumblebee tuna (don’t ask!! We use this like crazy at obedience school with the dog) 10/$10
Total $10.00
Used 5 coupons for $1.00/2
New total: $5.00
This is where I made my mistake. Because the total was only $5.00, they wouldn’t let me use the $5.00 CAT --- if I had thought quickly and thrown in a pack of gum or some silly thing, it would have gone fine. My Shaws is very finicky about “you have to pay something”. They will not let the total hit zero – no matter what.
So, I paid the $5.00 oop and figured I still made out just fine for the night.

Sum total: $17.86 OOP and a $5.00 CAT still in my pocket. If I have enough coupons, I’ll keep repeating with the Kleenex, paper towels, and tuna. Gotta think about more trash bags – I hate paying real money like that -- on anything really, but especially on trash bags.

Gotta Get To Shaws!! 4/17 and on

There is tremendous debate out there right now about the ConAgra catalina deal at Shaws. The advertisement says that it starts TODAY and ends on the 23rd (that would be logical --- it would be a week in the Shaws sales cycle). However, folks who are more into this than I am have called the catalina company and have been told that Shaws is booked to end this promotion TOMORROW!!.
So ---- Get thee to Shaws!!
Here's how the catalina deals work (always --- whenever, wherever) You buy a certain amount of participating products and the machine next to the cash register (called a catalina machine) spits out a coupon good for a certain dollar amount on your next shopping trip. They generally are good for 2 weeks or so. Usually they roll -- meaning you can use one catalina to pay for an order and get another catalina back --- That's the beauty of the deal.
Shaws is running a catalina deal on ConAgra products right now ---Spend $25 on Participating Products and receive $10 Off Your Next Trip!
Most catalina deals at most supermarkets work on Pre-Sale prices. Shaws promos usually do and this one is no exception. That means that the $25 you need to spend is not $25 at the cash register!! It is $25 if the items were at full price. Shaws is terrific about running sales concurrent with their catalina deals ----This time out is no exception. The only tricky part is that PSP (presale prices) are not consistent from area to area --- you have to double and triple check everything yourself. This is a time to definitely have your calculator smoking in the aisle of the supermarket. Remember $24.99 is NOT $25. If you're off by even one penny, the deal will not work. Check the shelf tags and make a list for yourself. It matters.
Before you even get started with coupons etc, there are a couple of deals that will work out to free food ---- just because Shaws loves us.

(4) Wesson Oils ($7.99PSP = 31.96 PSP) On sale $2.50x4=$10
$10 OOP G
et Back $10 = FREE

(2) Wesson Oils ($7.99PSP) $2.50x2=$5
(5) Hunts Ketchups ($2.00PSP) $1x5=$5
$10 OOP Get Back $10 = FREE

Remember --- this works if the PSP in your store is equal to or greater than the PSP listed here. Otherwise -- you'll need to recalculate to make sure that your PSP total is at $25. Special thanks for these scenarios goes to Deal Finding Mom

Now --- when you start looking at all of the stuff included in this promotion --- AND on sale (thank you, Shaws!!) the possiblities become even more enticing.

Marie Callender's Complete Dinners 12.5-21oz 4/$10 ($4.99 PSP)
Banquet Dinners 6.75-11oz $1.00
(3/$4 PSP)
Healthy Choice Complete Selections 10.5-12.5oz or Cafe Steamers 9.5-10.4oz 2/$6

Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn 4-ct, 6oz 3/$5
($2.89 PSP)
Egg Beaters 15-16oz 2/$5 ($3.99 PSP)

Hebrew National Franks or Knockwurst 11-12oz BOGO ($5.99 or $6.99 PSP)
Van Camp's Pork and Beans 15oz
Snack Pack Pudding 4-pack
Peter Pan Peanut Butter 18oz $2.69
Hunt's Pasta Sauce 26-26.5oz
Chef Boyardee cans 15oz or Microwavable Cups 7.5oz $1.00
($1.39 PSP)
Hunt's Ketchup 20-24oz
(not listed but reported working by SD!) $1.00 ($2.00 PSP)

Remember -- you need to double check the presale prices ---- the ones I've listed are what's being reported by people around New England who have done the deal --- its what the PSP is in THEIR store --- yours (or mine) is likely to be a little different ---- make sure is isn't going to spoil the deal for you.

Free Soap!!!

Who doesn't like free soap??? We all use soap, don't we???
Well, thank you Proctor and Gamble for providing free soap for all of us who are savvy enough to be paying attention ---
In the 4/5 P&G insert there is a $2 off Olay bar soap (When you look at the coupon, you wont' think it is good on soap, but if you check the tiny print all the way through, it IS!!).
The Olay 2-pack bar soap sells for about $1.97 at Walmart so you could get it for FREE with the coupon.
And, Target, Stop & Shop, Price Chopper and Shaw's sell the 2-packs for about $2.29-$2.49 so you could get it really cheap at these stores as well after the $2 coupon!
This is one of those times when you're glad if you have multiple copies of that week's insert. Soap is easy to stockpile -- it doesn't take much space, it doesn't spoil and you know you'll use it.

Supermarket Excursions: How I Save and Even Make Money at the Grocery Store too!!

I don't usually post my supermarket excursions -- but a few of you have asked specifically for them. This may get frustrating --- you all live in very different areas of NE with different supermarkets to work with. I shop both at home and in my work area --- so I shop a wide variety of markets (which you may or may not have). And just to frustrate everyone further -- I don't shop in the same markets every week.
Here's what I do:
  1. I sit down with each of the fliers from the markets that are available to me (that would be Price Chopper, Stop and Shop, Shaws, Big Y, Shop Rite, and A&P). I make lists of what's in the fliers that interests me and the prices
  2. As if find an item in another flier that is a better deal than where I first wrote it down, I cross it off the previous list and add it to the new list.
  3. I am a complete Slickdeals addict. After I've looked through the fliers and formed a tentative idea of what the deals are --- I go to Slickdeals and read through the forums quickly (some of them are very active lists) to see what I might have missed and to get my coupon matches started.
  4. Finally I use a database such as CouponMom's to double check for coupons to match my list.

Each week, I'm looking for deals on fresh produce, dairy and other things that are difficult to stockpile. I'm also on the lookout for free food!! If the free food is something that my family enjoys eating, it goes home and in the stockpile in our pantry. If not, then it comes home and goes to the food pantry to help feed people who need food. (I am a huge proponent of being generous with the time and skill of couponing!!)

My pantry is usually very well stocked with staples such as pasta, tuna, beans, dried fruit, flour, oil, rice, etc. Most of these were either FREE or at a very, very low cost. I plan our eating for the week around the staples in my pantry and the deals on fresh produce, dairy, and the occasional meat.

So --- by popular demand --- I'll begin posting my shopping lists for the supermarkets I'm working with that week (remember -- not all markets every week -- can you imagine the time it would take??)

Catalinas, Catalinas

Everything you always wanted to know about catalina deals but didn't know who to ask --- no that would NOT be me, silly.

But there is a tremendously terrific post here that explains the entire thing in great detail. Seriously -- you will understand --- you will get it. You will be able to spot a deal and do the deal after this little education.

Why are you still here??? Get yourself over to the Cherry Picker and get educated!!

YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary

I think that one of the internet abbreviations that tickles me most has got to be YMMV. I don't know why, it just makes me smirk when I see it. Well, today was certainly a YMMV kind of a day.

I did a fair amount of shopping: Stop and Shop, Big Y, Price Chopper, CVS, and Walgreens. (Whew!) Some stores, I did better than I had planned --- some stores were disappointing and deals didn't work out the way I had planned at all. It's just the way of things when you're stacking up sales, coupons and rebates/ECBs all over the place.

So here is how it all played out:

Stop and Shop: I did some fresh food shopping (fish and a few veggies that aren't likely to be at the farmer's market on Saturday). My sales hunting was limited to Windex (2/$5 and then coupons on top of that) and cat food (free coupons -- for the Humane Society). But when I got there, I discovered they actually had a better deal on the Cheerios than Walgreens --- where I had planned to do the Cheerios deal. So -- I shuffled my coupons around and worked the Cheerios deal in Stop and Shop (4/$6 less the Cheerios Challenge coupons -- ended up as 4/$2 Woo Hoo!!)

Big Y: I had rainchecks left from their 08/08/08 sale last week when they ran out of EVERYTHING. So I got two more boxes of Cheerios ($.88 each less a coupon for $.75 off two), and two cans of coffee ($.88 each). They also had L'Oreal Pro Vive shampoo on sale Buy One Get Two free -- and I had three coupons good for $1 each. It ended up at $1.99 for three bottles of shampooo. I really didn't save any money from the CVS L'Oreal deal, but I ended up with three bottles of shampoo instead of two.

Price Chopper: The only thing that really piqued my interest this week was the Scott toilet paper at 12 rolls for $5.99. That's not a bad price, but I had $.75 coupons and the flyer from Price Chopper had coupons for doubling any paper product coupon. Final price 12 rolls for $4.49. So, I bought 24 rolls. I have additional coupons, but I'm not sure I want to stockpile that much toilet paper. The food pantry can't take it because the rolls are not individually wrapped (one of the rules at the local food pantry). I'll have to decide before Saturday when the sale ends. We'll see.

CVS: This was hugely a YMMV kind of a trip. I planned to work the Johnson and Johnson deal with some smallish packages of Bandaids -- and I had a pile of coupons at the ready (realistically, I could have bandaided the entire US forces in Iraq with the bandaids from the coupons (hmmmm, that might have potential for the Charity Challenge....) But YMMV -- so only the funky super bandaids were working and the Neosporin. So I ended up with two tubes of Neosporin for just under $5.00 (paid in ECBs) and 5 ECBs back -- free Neosporin -- that's good. Then I hunted like mad (at two different CVS stores) for the toothpaste that is part of the glucose monitor deal. Not only couldn't I find it, but no one in either store had the first clue about it (I guess none of the other deal hunters in my area have tried this one yet eh???) I ended up with some Colgate that didn't work -- and a gift card for $5.00 because the shift supervisor at my favorite CVS was so terrific (Go Hollie!!) I couldn't find my Crest coupon in the mess I had made of my coupons by that point (I hate revising plans on the go). The Puffs tissues weren't the right ones (so the Grocery Game isn't foolproof then??)

Walgreens: the peanut butter deal worked flawlessly and I am the new owner of no fewer than 12 jars of peanut butter. The Kraft deal wasn't working at all (and they were out of Jello -- just bare shelves). But I did get the Hefty bags and some Jiffy Cornbread mix along with it). I also ended up with two AirWick oil warmers and two oil refills for free (didn't plan on them but I had the coupons handy and they aligned with the sale perfectly)

So, the next time I read YMMV, I'll smirk -- and then sigh --- such is life.
